It's the most common call we get every Dallas summer: "The AC is running, but it's just not cooling." Sometimes the fix takes five minutes and costs nothing. Sometimes it's a genuine repair. Here's how to tell the difference — and what to check before you call anyone.
Start with the two free checks
Before anything else, check your thermostat and your air filter. It sounds too simple, but these two solve a meaningful share of 'no cold air' calls.
- Thermostat: make sure it's set to COOL (not just ON), and that the fan is set to AUTO. A fan set to ON blows air continuously — including un-cooled air between cycles, which feels like the AC has failed.
- Filter: a filter clogged with a summer's worth of Dallas dust suffocates airflow. If you can't see light through it, replace it, then give the system an hour.
Cause 3: The outdoor unit isn't running
Walk outside. If the indoor fan is blowing but the outdoor condenser is silent, cooling physically cannot happen — the condenser is where heat actually leaves your house. A tripped breaker, failed capacitor, or burned-out contactor is usually to blame. Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. If it trips again, stop — repeatedly resetting a breaker into a shorted component is how small repairs become compressor replacements.
Cause 4: Refrigerant leak
Refrigerant isn't fuel — the system doesn't consume it. If it's low, it leaked. The signs: the AC cools poorly but not zero, runs constantly, and you may see ice on the copper lines. A proper repair finds and fixes the leak, then recharges to spec. Be wary of anyone who just 'tops it off' every summer without hunting the leak; you're paying for the same pound of refrigerant annually, and modern refrigerant isn't cheap.
Cause 5: Frozen evaporator coil
Counterintuitive but common: your AC can literally freeze in July. Restricted airflow or low refrigerant drops the indoor coil below freezing, ice builds, and airflow dies entirely. If you see ice anywhere — on the copper lines, on the indoor unit — turn the system OFF and let it thaw (run the fan only). Then call for service, because whatever caused the freeze is still there and will do it again, harder.
Causes 6 and 7: Duct problems and a failing compressor
In North Texas, ductwork lives in attics that hit 140°F. A disconnected or torn duct can dump your cold air into the attic — you're cooling the rafters while the bedrooms roast. This one hides for years because the system itself is fine.
The last and most serious possibility is the compressor itself. A compressor that hums but won't start, trips breakers, or runs without moving refrigerant is at the end of the road. On older systems, this is usually the moment to run the repair-versus-replace math honestly.
