When a Dallas electric bill crests $400, the AC gets the blame — but the AC is just paying the tab the house runs up. Cooling cost is a chain: how much heat gets in, how much cold air leaks out, and how efficiently the machine replaces it. Here's the whole chain, ranked by payback.
Free (do these this week)
- Raise the setpoint where you can — each degree is worth 3–5% of cooling cost.
- Run ceiling fans in occupied rooms (and off in empty ones — they cool people, not air).
- Close blinds on west windows after lunch; late-afternoon Texas sun through glass is a space heater.
- Grill outside or cook late; the oven fights your AC head-to-head at the worst hour of the day.
- Check the filter monthly in summer. A choked filter can add 10%+ to run costs by itself.
Cheap (under a few hundred dollars)
A professional coil cleaning and tune-up restores efficiency the system already paid for — dirty coils and low charge quietly add 15–25% to run costs. A smart thermostat automates setbacks and pre-cooling (8–15% typical savings here). And weatherstripping leaky doors plus sealing obvious attic penetrations trims the infiltration load every hour of the day.
The two big-payback projects in almost every DFW home
Duct sealing: your ducts run through a 140° attic, and the typical system leaks 20–30% of its conditioned air into that attic. Professional sealing is the single most under-rated efficiency project in Texas — it pays back in a couple of cooling seasons and makes every future system perform better.
Attic insulation: much of DFW's older housing carries half the recommended insulation. Topping up to R-38+ blunts the attic's heat assault on your ceilings, and frequently qualifies for federal 25C credits too. We flag insulation honestly during service calls because sometimes $1,000 of cellulose beats $10,000 of equipment.
The long game: equipment
If your system predates 2010, it may be running at half the efficiency of a modern unit even in perfect health. Replacement purely for savings rarely pencils on a healthy system — but when replacement time comes anyway, the jump from a worn 10-SEER to a right-sized 16 SEER2 system routinely cuts cooling bills by a third. The order of operations matters, though: seal the ducts and fix the envelope first, and you can often buy a smaller, cheaper system that runs less. That's the whole-house math most bids skip.
