Duct Repair & Replacement

Duct Repair & Replacement

According to the US Department of Energy, most heating and air conditioning systems operate at only 60 to 75 percent efficiency—mainly when air is lost through the duct system. Faulty ductwork forces your furnace or air conditioner work harder, causing additional wear and tear and reducing its lifetime.

Damaged ductwork can often be repaired by a qualified technician. However, if your ductwork is losing too much air in too many places, it may need to be replaced altogether. Here are a few signs your ductwork needs to have work done.

Old Ductwork

If you live in an older home, your duct system may need to be replaced entirely. On average, it takes between 10 and 15 years for ductwork problems to fully materialize. Ducts heat up and cool down over and over from normal use. Constant expanding and contracting eventually causes small stress fractures in the material and the ducts slowly break down. They eventually form leaks too big to be sealed and may collapse altogether.

High Utility Bills

If your ducts are leaking, you’re losing air conditioning to places where it isn’t needed. However, most leaks occur at the joints and are easily tested with a smoke machine—where there’s smoke, there’s a leak. To repair the leak, it’s filled with duct sealant and covered with insulation. A properly sealed duct system will save you money and keep the temperature in your home exactly where you want it.

Poor Air Quality

Do your allergies flare up when the furnace runs? Openings in your ductwork allow mold, dust and other debris to leak into the air you breathe. It can also introduce nasty odors into your home and promote mold growth—nice! Properly sealed ductwork not only saves you money but keeps you healthy too.
